Well I actually meant programming, C+ or something. Maybe you can give me a tip on some great software to write and compile the code with? I know there is a steep learning curve to programming but as long as my patience doesn't wear thin, I think I could manage to write something to myself at least ;-)

I mean, what are you thinking? A GUI frontend to the Linux version of HMA? That's certainly a valid goal, but it's fairly complex for a first project. On the other hand, the worthless programs (hello world) that you start with when learning a language are annoying and I personally prefer to start out with something that is actually useful or fun. For C++, I'd recommend Qt Creator (though your usage of Cinnamon might suggest that a GTK+ project would be more well-integrated and less dependent on extra libraries; I just dislike GTK+). If you choose to go with a GTK+ application, you can use Glade for interface design.
For compiling, obviously GCC regardless of the specifics of the application (so long as you're doing C/C++).

Yeah, I ask myself that too sometimes, what the hell am I thinking? You know, many years ago I was into homepages and making them. That was really fun and I wanted to have java in my pages for cool effects and after fiddling with those codes of lines (already available ones) I quickly learned what was what and I could manipulate the scripts to suit my needs. I even went on to master Flash but the purpose ended from which I wanted Flash so I didn't progress on that.

Maybe I set the goal to high on learning to program but as I see it, if I don't have a mission I don't have to do this or that. I just want to jump into it with an idea in mind to develop it and the rest will follow, I think.

I don't know much of the different languages there are, everyone favours their own choice from their own reasons. I figure that c/c++ is common enough to make something with and as I understand it, if you know one language then the other ones will be recognized too although with differences like different expressions for commands and what have you.

So that's my story about it :-D I need to sometimes force myself into situations where I cannot step back and let it go. It surely doesn't apply to programming but I like to see how far I can get and how fun it is. There is also a pot of gold somewhere with programming, if I master it maybe I could create something that lot of people want or need. I would give it freely and hope people are kind enough to donate me something as a thank you, that's all. And see if my pot fills up ;-)

I often set out creating something without having a good idea of what it'll look like at the end, just improvising. It's a little harder to do that with programming, but you can try.
Anyway, this is somewhat off-topic from the original thread. The Programming subforum can probably give you better advice than I can.

Yeah, lets end this thread and consider the mission accomplished!

Have a good one and again, thanks for your help. You'll maybe see me later with a billion questions on programming :-D or something ordinary like issues in the OS.

See ya later pal!
