Not able to login as a root through ssh

Hi all,

I'm not able to login as a root through ssh but i'm able to switch as a root user once i get into the Debian box

I already modified /etc/ssh/sshd_config to PermitRootLogin Yes and restart the ssh service

But still I'm getting Access Denied.

Thamks & Regards,
Lakshmi

I remember that if there is
AllowUsers directive in /etc/ssh/sshd_config, then only those users following that directive will be allowed to ssh the server.

Dear lakshminarayanan86,

It is always better not to allow direct root login through ssh. As there would not be any evidence left in log files regarding logged in user, unlike normal user login and switching to root.

But As you say PermitRootlogin is set to yes. You should be able to login as root.

Make sure if root user is listed in /etc/hosts.deny file as ssh honours this file, if ssh package is compiled with TCP Wrappers support.
