no system event sound

I have Fedora Core 2
somehow, the system events sound just never worked since the first day I installed FC2.
[sound preferences] -> [sound events]
when i click <Play> on any events, no error msg but no sound either

xmms, gaim, xine play their sounds just fine tho, and the system sounds files (*.wav) will play in xmms!!

anyone encounter similar problem or know how to resolve this?
thanks in advance
