No Sound Recognition

I'm currently using the Knoppix 3.6 distribution of Linux. I know it's a bit outdated, but it works excellently on my desktop with the exception that it won't emit any sound. I've tried to see if I could configure the sound settings, but since I don't have a sound card (my desktop has intergrated sound) nothing seems to be working. One of my friends told me it works best with an added sound card. Is this true? And if so, anyone got any suggestions as to which one I should get? Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

A large number of problems with sound on LQ are mixer levels. Try checking the levels with 'alsamixer' command and make sure the main ones are around 80%

Knoppix has every onboard sound in the history of creation. All you have to do is go in control center and configure it.
