No sound in Mandrake 10.1


CDs, and mp3s will play...but no sound.
Midi sounds will play on games.

opening audicity i get the error:

Error Initializing Audio
There was an error initializing the audio i/o layer.
You will not be able to play or record audio.

Error: Host error.

what ever info anyone needs will give...
please help, i am getting withdrawls

Try running alsamixer and make sure master or pcm channel is not muted.

Also look in /dev and make sure you have permissions to access the audio device, probably /dev/dsp0 /dev/mixer /dev/audio0 or /dev/audio/dsp0 ... etc.

alsamixer is at its max
tried /dev/mixer but permission denied
how could i solve that?

Finally working...
I did a clean install and changed the driver from the default sound driver(intel8x0) to an "optional/alternative" driver (i810_audio), sound works perfect now.
For those without sound, it could be as simple as that.
