Ubuntu drivers are based on open source, maybe you want to try Linux Mint that includes non free drivers. You can try linux Mint without destroying blank cd or your current installation with unetbootin.
The other way to solve this problem would be to find out sound card you are using by issuing lspci and lsusb in terminal.
