I recently installed FC3 and it went well, but my internet is not working. I used adsl-setup to set up my ADSL account and then ran adsl-start. When I check adsl-status it tells me:
Link is down (can't read pppoe PID file /var/run/pppoe-adsl.pid.pppoe)
I don't know what this means! I looked in /var/run and there is no file like that that I can see. Should there be? Does anyone know how to fix this? A computer without internet is pretty dull.
I'm assuming that you're using a USB modem? This is not much help, but when I got DSL, I didn't bother with the supplied USB modem. Bought a d-link ethernet modem for about £30. Was up and running in seconds. Not much help I know, but much easier.
If your modem is plugged into your ethernet port then you shouldn't really need to use the adsl-* programs to connect, you should be able to SSH or telnet or whatever into your modem if your network card is setup properly and go from there. When you boot press F2 to get a detailed view and see what it says for init eht0 interface. If it fails or takes ages then you know there's a problem somewhere.
So I call my ISP and tell them my IP and that I have new hardware and they tell me that I have to register said new hardware. What a huge amount of time I wated for nothing. I hope this note helps someone else. If your IP starts with 10.****** call your ISP and get that hardware set up!
