Question Newbie need help w/ USR 56K voice Faxmodem Ext. (connecting to the internet)

I recently bought a linux magazine (it came with a RHL 9.0 cd)
i did the installation according to the manual in the magazine, all was working well. (in fact it was gr8. Linux is way kool i might say. might even migrate to it asap)

but then i can't get myself to connect to the internet.
i've a US-Robotics 56k voice faxmodem EXTERNAL. (not sure if whether it is a winmodem or not.)

when i try to login into the ISP a/c it return me an error msg.

"cannot connect to ppp0 with error 8"

any linux buddies for advice here? pleasee... thnx in advance
