I am new to linux family, I would like to test linux in my OLD P-III ( though i have ubuntu 12 installed in a good system)
Want to install light weight Server with
LAMP - purely for Web development
mail server (sendmail/postfix/dovecot)
DNS server
completely for home usage.
I Have Fujitsu LIFEBOOK S4572 - PIII 750 MHz, working very good
with 8 GB HDD
256MB SDRAM
Dlink G650 Wifi PCMCIA
Max Resolution 1024 x 768
Which is the best Config to use...?
Please suggest.
yes, i would like to install any linux distro, coz the ubuntu 12 was not installed by me, it was installed and configured by one of my colleague. now he is not around, but its working without any problem.
I would like to install and test to learn myself thats why..
i want to know whether the same 12.04 can be installed in P3? will be good enough to handle?
Well, if you say you want to learn may I suggest a cute little rolling distro by the name of ArchLinux? It is bloat free and will only contain the packages you need and use, and if it ever breaks you know it is completely your fault.
I
Debian Server will also run on your P3 hardware and is almost identical to Ubuntu Server in many ways. Wheezy/Testing is similar to Ubuntu 12.04 and Squeeze/Stable to 10.04. Wheezy is currently frozen for pre-release testing and is plenty stable enough for a home-user project, so if I were you I wouldn't bother with Squeeze at this point.
Whichever distro you choose I recommend a text-only server install, and then you can control it from your master computer in a terminal window using SSH. Here's a link to some fun projects for old computers!
@snowpine your link(fun projects) is awesome, ofcourse i would like to use text mode only. Ubuntu 12.04 server is not bit heavy for P3? if it really goes good without any problem, i would like to give a try.
Ubuntu Server documentation says your P3 meets or exceeds the minimum specs... but I can't tell you from experience because I don't have any hardware that old!
you know what, i have 286 also still in its working condition with windows
now i installed ubuntu 12.04LTS server(with LAMP,openssh), in P3 its up and running for the past 3 days without any problem, its very simple to install, dont know if something goes wrong. hope it should not happen soon, at least until i gain some knowledge in ubuntu
