Network Settings displaying nothing else aside from Modem Connection

Hey ,

I'm really new to Ubuntu and I installed ver 7.10 Gutsy Gibbon on my Aspire 4736z. When I checked my network settings all i see under connections is Modem Connection.

I'd like to ask how to enable WLAN and LAN networks.

I ran ifconfig on the console and it displayed:

lo Link encap: Local Loopback
inet addr: 127.0.01 Mask:225.0.0.0
UP LOOPBACK RUNNING MTU:16436 Metric:1
RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packets: 0 errors: 0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:0
RX bytes :0 (0.0 b) TX bytes:0 (0.0 b)

Thanks, I hope you could help me out..

Ubuntu 7.10 is not supported any more (EOL-April 18th, 2009), you shouldn't be using it. If you have a fairly new machine, its likely not to have the appropriate drivers for the newer hardware.

I would suggest you ditch it at download a recent ISO and certainly increase your chances of it working out of the box.

While it is true that Ubuntu 7.10 is quite old. If you are in particular of using the same Ubuntu flavor instead of upgrading it,.. let's see..

From Aspire 4736z specs, Atheros ar8131 is your lan controller. Do confirm if this by typing
#lspci | less

And look out for Atheros or Ehternet controller or Network controller like that.

If {
You are sure that Atheros ar8131 is your LAN controller. Do visit this http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1255082
}
Elsif, {
You dont know to figure out from the lspci output. Please post your lspci output here.
}
Else {
You may want to upgrade you Ubuntu
}

Thanks for the advice I installed 12.04 on my machine. But I still can't boot normally. I still end up booting through recovery mode then I choose normal boot and I'm able to boot but the display's resolution isn't as good as it should be.. Any advice in getting my display driver to work?

Have you tried changing the resolution? Also, when you select your display panel, you should be able to see if your graphics card is displayed. Else you might want to install the display driver for it.
