Smile Network connections not authenticating me as root

Hello All...I have installed fedora 8 and sometime back I made a yum update...now I find that I am unable to open "Network Device Control" from the startup menu. The strange thing is when I try opening "Network" from the same tab, I am being authenticated as my username "sugantha" and not as root. When I try entering the password corresponding to my username nothing happens...Internet is still working fine with one change...The network connection symbol in my system tray used to be like a modem device and now it has changed to a network symbol with two computers connected.I dont know what is going on and would like to understand what has happened. Thanks in advance...

That's interesting.

Does the shortcut, itself, contain any information that might help.

My initial instinct is to think that the underlying cause is that (assuming you're running it as root) you're being verified by

logname (variable set by login and can't be altered)

rather than

LOGNAME (environment variable set by shell and can be altered)

which would mean a possible security update is disallowing network updates unless you log in as root.

Hope this helps point you in the right direction!

, Mike
