Question need to resize ext3 filesystem

I am running LVM (logical Volme Manager) on my Redhat 8 system. I putposely left some extra space when I set the system up. Now I need it.

I figured out how to extend the volume. But now I need to extend the filesystem apparently. There are 2 gotcha's that I ran into:
1) It's a ext3 filesystem
2) it's the /usr partition

I can find instructions on resizing ext2 FS but nothing on resizing ext3

Would appreciate any assistance

Hi, Welcome to LQ

Have you looked into a program called parted?
http://www.gnu.org/software/parted/

This software is able to resize LVM and RAID IIRC... Yes, here's the direct link:
http://www.gnu.org/manual/parted-1.6...ted.html#SEC63

Cool

The problem with parted is that it deals with the LV, in this case named IDE,as a single partition.
The man page eludes to being able to resize the FS inside of partition. But requires a starting point. Because I have several FS inside my LV, I have no way of knowing where the starting point is.

It has been suggested that I umount my ext3 FS, remount it as ext2, use resize2fs to resize the FS, then remount it as ext3. But Seems like I remember that shifting between the 2 FS is not trivial.

I am continuing to look for definative information.
