mysql client api

How do I upgrade MySQL client API from 3.23 to 4.x for PHP?

I've got the following

MySQL 4.11standard
Centos 4.1
PHP 4.3.11
MySQL API Client 3.23 (this is what I need to up to 4.0)

Did you compile PHP with MySQL when you initially installed this or are you using an RPM-based distro (Mandriva, Suse, Redhat)?
