I'm beginning to think changing from Mint 13 was a bad idea. I installed Mint 16 and since have lost use of my Canon MG 3520 printer. I changed to Mint 16 because I did not know the password to install applications as my son installed 13 for me and he couldn't remember it either. The printer worked fine in Mint 13. Is it possible to go back to 13 again or would I be better off trying to figure out the problem with 16?

It was a bad idea. Look at the site below and you will see that Mint 16 will be supported for two more months (July, 2014) while Mint 14 will be supported until April, 2017. Usually, people will only update to a newer version if something on the older one does not work.

The password to be used is the password of the primary user created during install. To install software you would need to prefix a command in a terminal with 'sudo'. If you use the Software Center, it will prompt you for that password also. If you forgot that password, the link below explains how to do it.

You should stick with Mint 16 and learn how to install the printer once and for all. That will serve you well in the future. There are definitely linux drivers available for your printer so it's just a matter of following the Mint 16 procedure for installing printers. Since Mint is popular amongst newbies I don't expect you would have any problems. If you do come back and explain what they are. Telling us that "I installed Mint 16 and since have lost use of my Canon MG 3520 printer." is not terribly useful. You need to tell us exactly what steps you took and how your system responded to those steps.

He won't be able to 'stick with Mint 16' long if he wants an updated system as support for it ends in July. Better off waiting for the full release of Mint 17 or sticking with Mint 13 which has almost 3 years of support left, particularly in this case where his printer worked on Mint 13.

Ok, so I followed the instructions in another post and this is what happened in the terminal.

Ok, it still does not work and I'm surrendering. I'm going back to 13. Thanks for the suggestions.

It seems that going back to 13 is best since, as was pointed out, Mint 16's life is coming to an end soon. Regarding the errors generated by the tar command you gave, was the tarball, cnijfilter-mg3500series-4.00-1-deb.tar.gz, located in your home directory (called "~" on the command prompt)? I don't believe it was and that was the cause of the error you got. You could try untarring it again but this time being sure that you're issuing the command in the folder which contains the tarball.

Success, My printer is now working, I downloaded and installed Mint 17. It was a perfect download and it downloaded the driver as soon as I selected which printer I was trying to install. Good bye 16, I will not miss you!
