Let's start with basics.

Does the camera show up in the nautilus file manager and can you navigate to it there as if were just another drive and see files?

If not, try running the command lsusb from a terminal (assuming the camera is connected via usb cable) and posting the output here (please enclose it in "code" tags that become available when you press the "Go Advanced" button below).

Edit: If it doesn't show in lsusb, try the dmesg command.

I would definitely want a second opinion, but I can't see any indication that the camera is being detected.

When the camera is plugged in to the computer and you turn on the camera power, do any messages appear on the camera display? Mine (a Fuji) displays "USB."

Have you tried it in other ports and or other devices in this port to rule out a malfunctioning USB port?

Excellent suggestion. Also a different cable if you have one that fits or a different computer with the same cable to try to rule that out.
