Linux "hotplug" should auto-detect it...

Hi -
With my CoolPix, I plug it in and "It Just Works". No drivers, no configuration.

Specifically:
1. I'm running SuSE 9.3 with the standard KDE desktop.

2. I plug in the cable to a free USB port, plug the other end in to the camera and, lastly, turn the camera on.

3. After a few minutes, a Konqueror window pops up:

Konqueror URL:
file:/media/usb-000003638753:0:0:0p1

Konqueror window contents:
drwxr-xr-x 3 paulsm users 4096 2002-12-31 23:00 dcim
drwxr-xr-x 2 paulsm users 4096 2002-12-31 23:00 misc
-rwxr-xr-x 1 paulsm users 512 2002-12-31 23:00 nikon001.dsc

4. I can also see my camera with the "mount" command:
mount =>
/dev/sda1 on /media/usb-000003638753:0:0:0p1 type subfs (rw,noexec,nosuid,nodev,sync,procuid,iocharset=utf8)

5. And finally, I can see the USB hotplug event using the "dmesg" command:
usb 1-1: new full speed USB device using address 2
usb 1-1: Product: NIKON DSC E2100
usb 1-1: Manufacturer: NIKON
usb 1-1: SerialNumber: 000003638753

<= YOU'LL NOTICE THAT MY COOLPIX IS AN OLD "2100", NOT AN "8800" ... BUT
THEY SHOULD WORK THE SAME...

'Hope that helps .. PSM
