Is it just a USB drive?
And do you mean by GUI file manager (which one?) or via the "mount" command?
Try running "fdisk -l" as root and posting the output here.

Does your dmesg recognize that you added the drive and show you what drive designation it was assigned?

What Desktop or Window Manager are you using? KDE, for example, has a very nice utility for detecting new devices.
