Monitor display un-readable post install

Need some help please.

First time Linux user, I've just installed Fedora 3 (64bit ver). On initial install my monitor (DiamondPro750sb) was not recognised, and the display then corrupted. No problem, re-booted and added 'linux resolution 1024x768'. Install was faultless.

Followed the reboot option after the successful install. After the 'initialising hardware' part of bootup the monitor screen corrupted again (completely unreadable). Had a nose around the forums and it seems I should be looking in /etc/X11/xorg.conf to change monitor specs??

I am able to access a command shell by use of a rescue disk, but my knowledge of shell commands is limited to cd ,ls ,pwd and not much else. In the command shell I managed to navigate to /etc/X11 *phew*, but could not 'see' or 'access' any information in the xorg.conf?

Any ideas please

Just a little update....for any that are interested

After much Googling I ran the following from the command shell:

Xorg -configure
X -config /root/xorg.conf.new
StartX

At which point the monitor went blank and I was forced to reset.

This confirms that monitor/display card is the problem??

I have read somewhere that I can use the following to enter an 'interactive' mode for changing displays etc:

xorgcfg -textmode

Couldnt get this to work however....

Can anyone tell me please how to edit my /xorg.conf.new file as I'm pretty sure this is the problem? But, hey, I'm only 2 days old

(BTW my PCIe = 6600, monitor=Diamond pro750sb)
