Question mod_ssl and apache 2

Distro: Red Hat Enterprise
Apache version: 2.0.49 w/ mod_perl, PHP, MySQL support

When I compiled/built Apache from source a few months ago, I did not include mod_ssl support. Now, I want to have part of a site secured. I have installed OpenSSL and generated a key/CSR, and have a signed certificate. But I am having all sorts of trouble...

Main question: Do I need to reconfigure Apache with mod_ssl support? Or is there a way around this?
