Microsoft 's visual studio development equivalence fro linux?

One of the reason why wndows is so widespread is the tools they have for window development. Almost anybody can produce those quickie applications using visual studio.

Does linux have something equivalence to MS visual studio?
If not, I think that should be the next step for linux community.
The easeness of developing applications.
