media player

Hi everyone!My name is Pete-Totally new to Linux-running ubuntu and the updates are done but i want to watch a movie and cannot-how do i do this step by step-sorry but this is all new to me.Had it with windows.

Open Synaptic and search for Mplayer

tried but nothing-says multimedia on side bar and nothing-did a search-nothing
