Unhappy Making GRUB menu

I've now been through what all XP/Partition Magic/Linux users seems to have been through. Partitioning, installing, reinstalling, reinstalling, reinstalling, reinstalling and repairing. And thanks to great documentation all over the www, including here of course, I've finally got both system working. Almost...

After repairing XP, I was all but surprised that GRUB was no longer part of my booting process. So with RH CD1 I got myself into rescue mode, and did what seemed natural:
chroot whatever (/mnt/sysimage if I'm not mistaking)
(/sbin/)grub-install /dev/hda
and reboot.

Thinking I've finally done it I waited for the GRUB "login screen" to appear in front of me, but I'd never got that pleasure. Instead I got the all so boring "grub>".

So the question is: How do I get GRUB to make this menu for me (btw: the file grub.conf doesn't exist)? And if that isn't possible: How do I write that menu manually?

And sorry 'bout all the misspellings, being a tired Norwegian with no dictionary close by...

Lightbulb

if you have your boot disk that you created, you can boot to the RH system and run grub-install /dev/hdx (where x = the boot partition) and then reboot the system without the disk, this should work.

any apologies for providing wrong info ahead of time if this doesn't work for you.

There is also a good HOW-TO on GRUB. This is also in case I completely missed the mark
