Unhappy Lost directory need to recover.

I was backing up my hard drive last night when the backup drive died. Somehow some files are now missing from my hard drive. Any idea how to recover them on the hard drive. I'm using Mint 7, I was preparing to move to Mint 9.

Thanks!

You can try some recovery software, e. g. SleuthKit.

Turn off the pc, boot from a live media that has photorec on it, run it on the offending drive and cross your fingers.

Try to use any recovery files software..
from acronis, easeus, etc..
it can be used in a defective hdd and deleted files. hope so it will help..
or try to use your old hdd (linux mint 7 installed)
then boot in live cd.
then copy all the files in your hdd. and save it into external hdd.
