Question login and password for new install


i have been fighting a raspberry pi 4 for a month. there links and downloads are broken, and dont seem to get me any where! i was so happy i found "rufus", (no thanks to them) and a debain OS that booted up and worked ! but i was sad to find my self not knowing the login and password ---(20200831_raspi_4.img.xz)and this (sha256) <---- might help someone help me i dont know what that all means but its what the image named its self when it downloaded, ANY help would be golden! :-)

Welcome to LinuxQuestions

If you installed Pi OS the default username is pi and password raspberry.

As a beginner I suggest using the noobs installer.

The Pi does not use the same bootloader process as a PC but I guess it did not matter...

pi returns login incorrect,when i go to type in the password noting shows up that i type innot even a "*" or anything i have next to no exp. with anything linux so i dont know if this is normal. and it just loops back to: rpi4-20200831 login:

It would help if you posted a link where you downloaded that image file. Passwords typed in on the command line are not echoed or display a *, you just have to type it "blind".

With no experience I would go back and start over and use NOOBS to install PI OS. All you need to do is format the SD card as FAT and unzip the noobs file to the card.
Insert it into the Pi and plug in the power.

There is a image utility just for the Pi that you can download and install the OS to the SD card too.
