I don't think that's the kernel that ships with 10.4. I have 10.4 on a dual boot:
Code:
bash-4.1# ls /other/tmp/ubuntu/boot
System.map-2.6.32-24-generic initrd.img-2.6.32-24-generic
System.map-2.6.32-24-generic-pae initrd.img-2.6.32-24-generic-pae
abi-2.6.32-24-generic memtest86+.bin
abi-2.6.32-24-generic-pae vmcoreinfo-2.6.32-24-generic
config-2.6.32-24-generic vmcoreinfo-2.6.32-24-generic-pae
config-2.6.32-24-generic-pae vmlinuz-2.6.32-24-generic
grub vmlinuz-2.6.32-24-generic-pae
Something about that doesn't seem right. Is that possibly Ubuntu SERVER that you installed? Ubuntu server doesn't default to a graphical login from what I understand. I think you should definitely download a new ISO.

Hi I have just downloaded a fresh version of Ubuntu and it appears to have installed OK. I have just booted the PC and the GUI is now running. It's very late now, so I will fully test it tomorrow evening.

Many Thanks for all of the support and hopefully we can get started on learning how to use Linux.

Kind Regards

Barry

Hi All

I have downloaded a fresh copy of Ubuntu and it has installed without and issue. It now boots perfectly well and appears to be operating absolutely fine.

So, I would like to say a big thank you for all of the advice and prompt responses. My daughter is delighted and she will spend the weekend exploring Ubuntu.

Regards

Barry
