You mean to say SMTP is respnsible for sending a mail is it? then which protocol is for receiving a mail?

At its simplest:

SMTP - Simple Mail Transfer Protocol is the protocol used for sending mail including between servers.

IMAP and POP3 - Protocols that clients can use to access mail stored on a server.

You need to decide on what you mean by "receiving" mail.

If you're talking about protocols used by your internet service provider, they should tell you. So mine uses POP3 and SMTP, which is probably usual.
