When do you press the e key during boot, and do you type anything after pressing the E key.

edit your /etc/default/grub to make this line like this
Code:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="nouveau.modeset=0"
to edit the /etc/default/grub
Code:
sudo nano /etc/default/grub
then run
Code:
sudo update-grub
reboot and see if that works

yes
This will open a text editor to edit a grub configuration file. that has to be edited
Code:
sudo nano /etc/default/grub
command keys will be displayed at bottom of text window
add your option to this line like this
Code:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash nouveau.modeset=0 "
ctrl-x to exit, it will ask do you want to save
Code:
sudo update-grub
This will update the grub boot loader menu so you won't have to press e to input the boot option

Code:
grub> configfile /boot/grub/grub.cfg
