Question Linux Logging to /dev/log. Have impact on Disk IO?

Hi All,

If I have a system that logs via /dev/log then will that actually cause disk IO because its just a character 'special file'? If someone can provide a reference towards a good page to read that would be handy. I think I must have been searching for the incorrect terms as it didn't really turn anything up I was after. Is something like dev/log also async so that if speed is of the essence then it will be quick to?

Thanks,
m
