linux kernel installation

Hi,
I have a problem in installing linux kernel from sources. Everything went fine and when I reboot my system from my newly installed kernel, it is showing all directories from command prompt. If I want to edit a file using vi command, it showing vi not found. How to integrate VI with the newly installed kernel. Thanks.

Ravi
