Linux From Scratch- Binutils Configure Folder not found?

I've been using LFS for a few hours and I've had no problems that I wasn't able to fix. But now I'm installing temporary files and I'm having trouble. The books reccomended me to install Binutils first.

The Binutils documentation recommends building Binutils outside of the source directory in a dedicated build directory:

mkdir -v ../binutils-build
cd ../binutils-build

And I did, and I'm in the binutils-build directory.

Then it tells me to do this:

../binutils-2.19.1/configure \
--target=$LFS_TGT --prefix=/tools \
--disable-nls --disable-werror

When I enter that in, I get this message in the terminal:

lfs:/mnt/lfs/binutils-build$ ../binutils-2.19.1/configure \
> --target=$LFS_TGT --prefix=/tools \
> --disable-nls --disable-werror
bash: ../binutils-2.19.1/configure: No such file or directory

What am I doing wrong?

I've tried it with the extracted tar file and the tarred one. Both a no go, and tried it through the sources directory (where all my packages are in tarballs)

Hello and Welcome to LQ,

What is your starting point when executing the commands, e.g. in what directory are you in when you execute them?

I started last weekend too with LFS and had the same problem until I realized that I needed to execute the commands from the $LFS/sources directory.

So when you extract the binutils package you 'cd' into that directory. That's the first step 'assumed' by the book. Next when in that directory ($LFS/sources/binutils-2.19.1) you issue the command to create the temporary dir:
Code:
mkdir -v ../binutils-build
cd ../binutils-build
and you encounter yourself in that directory.

So the binutils-build directory is in the same level as the binutils-2.19.1 directory.

Do a 'pwd' to find out your present working directory.

Kind regards,

Eric

Forgot to mention:

LinuxQuestions also has a forum dedicated to LFS where you can find heaps of info. Click on the Forums link, scroll down to Linux - Distributions and the first sub-forum is the Linux From Scratch one.

Kind regards,

Eric

Thanks guys, I fixed it.

Turns out the config was in a directory in the binutils folder. And my binutils-build folder wasn't in the sources.

Hello,

Glad it worked out. Remember, the LFS book assumes that you extract all the packages in the source directory, cd into the created directory and then execute the commands as indicated in the book.

Kind regards,

Eric
