I just spent 5+ hours yesterday downloading various programs to put ubuntu on a DVD for myself to find out that, once it's working, the internet is not.

I have a LINKSYS WRT54G wireless PCI that works on-and-off with windows, but I know how to fix that, ubuntu doesn't have the convenient icon in the bottom right corner when firefox is running, so where is it?

It says that it's connected (duh) but the internet cannot be found, so how can I find it?

You might want to take a look at the man page for ifconfig which is a command-line utility for adjusting your network settings.

Failing that, you might want to take a look in the KDE Control Center (I'm assuming you're using KDE) under 'Internet & Network' for more options.

First, in Ubuntu, try going under System -> Administration -> Hardware Drivers. Your particular card may be supported, but it might not have free (meaning open source) drivers. Ubuntu aims to be fully free out of the box so you have to manually go in there and enable the driver.

Are you sure it's linux and not your Linksys router? Try turning everything off including modem, turn modem on, after it syncs in plug your pc into the modem and see if everything works. If it does then your problem is with your router and not Ubuntu.

Linsys and Linux tend to together well so it sounds like a configuration issue. Maybe your router is set up to use DHCP when it really needs a static address?
