can't connect linksys+dhcp

I have a linksys card using the tulip module. ifconfig lists eth1 and LO

eth1 is the linksys and my eth0 is an onboard.

My eth1 loads up fine but, it does not connect. If I do /etc/init.d/net.eth1 i get an error saying it can't bring up eth1.

this is on gentoo. Any help?
