Hey, I installed Mandrake 9.1 on an old P133 machine (dualbooted w/ win98se) and the installation went completely smoothly. However, when I reboot the system, i receive a "LILO - Keytable read/checksum error" and the system halts at that point. I tried reinstalling Mandrake a couple times thinking I may have made some mistakes somewhere along the line but had the same issue with each install.
There is a Western Digital bootloader (EZ-Bios) that runs at boot that enables my bios to correctly detect the hard drive size but from what I have read, Mandrake should detect this and install LILO properly. Has anyone had the same issue? does anyone know how to resolve this?
*bump* I Google'd the problem but that search yielded no answers. The mini-HOWTO for LILO didn't have anything either. I dont have access to the full howto. Anyone know where else i can look/research?
Have you ever checked the harddrive for errors?
Did you download the cds and fail to checksum them? And again checksum the image of the cds after you burned them?
Have you just tried running lilo as root, or maybe lilo -v, to try and fix it?
Proud - I scandisked and fully defragged the hard drive before installation. Running LILO from root with lilo -v is what i'm actually going to try next once i get a proper boot disk. Mandrake CDs were checksummed just fine before installation also.
If the above fails, I'll give GRUB a run. Thank you both!
anyone else ever have a similar issue with EZ-Bios or a similar hard-drive boot loader?
if you can, uninstall the ez-bios bootloader first. Seems to me i recall that drive overlay programs interfere with LILO...
for example, this from RedHat:
"installation of Red Hat Linux to a hard drive with drive overlay software
Installation support will NOT assist the customer with the installation of Red Hat Linux to a hard drive that has drive overlay software installed (Western Digital's EZ-Drive, Seagate's DiscWizard, etc). The only recommendation that we will give in a case like this is to remove the drive overlay software, or install Linux to a second hard drive without the software installed."
Does anyone have a solution for this yet?
For my win2k to recognize a large seagate drive I have to install Seagate Discwizard on the MBR.
Problem is that LILO is already there and Discwizard won't install.
Tonight I'll try to:
- remove LILO
- install discwizard
- make /boot partition in linux
- install GRUB on /boot partition and not on the MBR
