Latest version of linux needs to be installed on a P3celeron 312 MB 40 GB HDD.Suggest

Hello,

I have one old desktop @ my home configuration being 40GB HDD,312 MB SDRAM,1GHz P3 celeron processor.

40GB HDD is divided into c,d,e,f & g drives.
C:\ drive includes Windows ME(Millenium Edition)
D:\ deive includes Windows XP.

I had tried to install Ubuntu 5.04 version to E:\ drive after formatting.
It was successful(Ubuntu considered it as hda #6) but the exception was that GRUB was not able to install either to the master harddisk or to any partition.

I installed LILO & it directly goes to Linux without giving me an option to choose from other OS.

Now I want to uninstall ubuntu 5.04 & get back to XP(I believe ME has been washed out as this OS was not detected by Ubuntu while instaling base OS)& install latest version of ubuntu(9.04) or Fedora/RHEL. This is used for practicing System Admin as well as C++ development works.

Please suggest how can I proceed.

Thanks,
Raj

So your GRUB won't install to the MBR? I've never had that problem but I have an idea. Install the CD like normal, but install GRUB to a USB drive. Then go into BIOS and set the boot order to USB above the HDD. If you want to go into Windows, just take out the USB stick. It looks like Windows NTLDR got wiped too so you may need to recover XP. More information would be needed to find out about what happened to ME. If programming is what your needing both systems for, I use Windows only as a virtual machine. I use VirtualBox, just because it's so easy to use. This way I can test apps out in both machines repeatedly without rebooting. I got Fedora 32 bit with KDE, Windows XP pro, all running on my Ubuntu 64 bit host.
