Erm, polish it with your tie? Can you swap the CD drive in the wife's computer with another drive? you have to be
SO careful doing work on a wife's computer because if it works well you get cuddles and if it doesn't you get a frypan upside the head and frequent sighs of "Why couldn't you have just left it like it was?"
Fiddle the IDE cables to the drive as well, sometimes stuff doesn't like booting off a slave or master or the first in the chain versus the second in the chain etc.
