Question kppp

I have managed to connect to my ADSL account using kppp in turbolinux and mandriva but not in ubuntu or knopix. Why is that?
I was not able to connect to my ADSL account using the application that ships with gentoo instalation package (i don't remeber its name but it works under console as the inernet is needed during gentoo istall) - strager still the application said that connection has been established
