Knoppix on USB stick sometimes runs very slow

I have knoppix 7.2 installed on a 34 GB USB stick (I used the DVD iso for this) . When first used this worked perfectly and fast. Now it often runs extremely slowly. This is not an internet access problem as even the word processor runs slow when the problem is present. I have 4 GB of Ram so don't think this is a problem. I have a 4 core cpu 2.50 gigahertz Intel Core2 Quad Q8300
64 kilobyte primary memory cache
2048 kilobyte secondary memory cache
Sometimes there is a problem, sometimes not.
Thanks for any help

Howdy!

There may be some ways to go. One might be to run top command. Another might be to use a performance or system monitor for clues.

Since you say sometimes, it makes me think that some device isn't always being set correctly. Could it be that you are on a usb hub? I'd suspect the usb dropping down to a lower speed. The usb flash could have some issues too. Maybe a power issue like cpu throttling. Could be bad ram even.

It could be a usb hub, but I would say that it is more likely running to many programs or processes. Run top to see what you have running or look for the system monitor in the programs folder and post back with the results.

Cheers,
