Kernel Updates -LInux Mint 17.1 w/Cinnamon

I'm new to Linux and have a question regarding the updating of Linux Kernels.

Should I wait until a kernel update is offered through the update manager, or should I go and get an updated kernel from the update manager/view/linux kernels?

Only take those offered.

Don't be surprised if you have to wait many months.
Mint doesn't tend to offer kernels at all frequently.

Agreed - there is almost never a reason to rush kernel updates. See that exclamation mark under "Regression" ?.
If you manually install you may have difficulty getting support - or sympathy.

The delay mentioned is acceptable to almost everyone.
