try "ifconfig eth0 up" as root.
also, see if your driver modules (if you had built them as modules), are loaded.
for instance, i use a sis900 10/100, and i built them in as a module. so,if i ever want to use that, i would do a "modprobe sis900", and it will show up under "lsmod".
if you built the driver into the kernel, then see if it was recognized at boot time using "dmesg". do a 'dmesg | grep "eth"', and that should show stuff related to ur card. otherwise just go thro dmesg looking for anything related.
