kernel issues

This is the first time trying to compile a kernel. Im trying to install the new 2.4.23 release and I get it installed, but cant get the comp networked, when i type ifconfig, i just see the lo device and cant get my eth0 config back. What should I be looking for when compileing the kernel to resolve this.

Thanks

try "ifconfig eth0 up" as root.

also, see if your driver modules (if you had built them as modules), are loaded.
for instance, i use a sis900 10/100, and i built them in as a module. so,if i ever want to use that, i would do a "modprobe sis900", and it will show up under "lsmod".

if you built the driver into the kernel, then see if it was recognized at boot time using "dmesg". do a 'dmesg | grep "eth"', and that should show stuff related to ur card. otherwise just go thro dmesg looking for anything related.
