Kernel compilation question

After downloading the latest kernel from www.kernel.org (2.6.8.1), I attempted to follow the instructions contained on the readme. It would have been fine, if the kernel WAS in gzip format as the readme said it was, not the bzip2 it actually is .

So, instead of doing gzip -cd linux-2.6.8.1.tar.gz | tar xvf -, what do I put instead to start it off?

Thanks in advance

Nick

Hmm, right, managed to unpack it, did make mrproper, then did make oldconfig to use as much of my exsiting config as possible, then make, then make install, then make modules_install.

According to what I think I know, thats about the extent of what I need to do.

BUT

The new kernal doesn't work full stop, the the 2.4 kernal does a panic, and throws an init error back at me (sorry, didn't catch it )

So, can I rollback somehow, is can I fix it?

please help me ( I'm only a )
