Unhappy KDE Backspace proble,

I recently installed Slackware 10 . I am now having a problem with the backspace key in KDE. When I use the backspace key the cursor moves to the left and the character is gone. However when I move to the right by entering another character or hitting the space bar the letter 'q' is in the place of the character I wanted to delete.

After doing some searching online I created a file called .Xmodmap and put it in the X11/xinit directory. In tis file I entered keycode 22 = "BackSpace". This id not help. I have this problem in all KDE apps and terminal windows.

I have the same set up on a PC at work (different model pc) with no problems.

Any suggestions as to how to get the backspace key to function properly?

Thanks

check what keyboard map you are using. use a command line tool to change the keyboard map (to US for example) as that would do the required changes in all files concerned. i know the tool in RHEL4 (system-config-keyboard) but not for slackware.(try kbdconfig or try to google)
