k3b writer detection problem ;-(

Hi all,
i have a small problem with gitting k3b to correctly detect my writer. It shows up as reader not writer.

Code:
cdrecord -scanbus
Cdrecord 2.00.3 (i686-pc-linux-gnu) Copyright (C) 1995-2002 Jörg Schilling
Linux sg driver version: 3.1.25
Using libscg version 'schily-0.7'
scsibus0:
cdrecord: Warning: controller returns wrong size for CD capabilities page.
        0,0,0 0) 'CD-ROM ' 'Drive/F5E ' '0.28' Removable CD-ROM
        0,1,0 1) 'ASUS ' 'CRW-4824A ' '1.0 ' Removable CD-ROM
        0,2,0 2) *
        0,3,0 3) *
        0,4,0 4) *
        0,5,0 5) *
        0,6,0 6) *
and my fstab file has the correct /dev/scd0 and /dev/scd1 entries.

I can ,however , write cd's with X-CDROAST.

Any help would be appreciated.

PS i am running Slack 9.1.

What kernel version are you using? I'm using 2.6.8 and I have the same problem. K3b say not to use 2.6.8 and later. See here for details:

http://k3b.plainblack.com/index.pl/news2

It appears there is a new version that may fix your problem if you are running that kernel. Give that a try.

The new kernels have code to protect the cd burner from damage, but you need to get the latest cvs k3b to work with 2.6.8 up... I don't know if there is a fix for dvd-rw tools yet or not. k3b was still sending write commands in read mode, which the kernel is rejecting due to the latest code... cdrecord works okay, which is why xcdroast works I guess...

So, original poster, we need to know what kernel you are running

If it is a 2.6.8 or 2.6.9 then you can always do a quick kernel hack to make the older software work until you get updates for them... I couldn't build the k3b cvs, tho I was able to hack the latest k3b source to make it work. But had to alter the kernel for the dvd writing anyway... Hopefully it will all be sorted out soon.

Well, the k3b *15 version is fixed for the 2.6 kernel I think, and you're using and 2.4 kernel anyway, so I guess it's a different problem

I'm a bit stuck. Al the k3b problems lately have been with 2.6.8 kernels and up...

Sorry, I'm not to familiar with the k3b setup requirements but just so you've got something to look into, maybe you could check the kernel configuration to do with scsi and ide options? Sounds like the kernel is not reporting the right thing to cdrecord and k3b.

Update : turns out it was a bug in the program the new version *.16 should fix detction problem with 2.4.* kernels.

Question : how do i remove the previous version (i compiled it from the source)?
Do i just manually remove :
Code:
./opt/kde/bin/k3b
./opt/kde/share/doc/HTML/en/k3b
./opt/kde/share/apps/k3b

/opt/kde/lib$ ls *k3b*
libk3baudiometainforenamerplugin.la* libk3bplugin.so@
libk3baudiometainforenamerplugin.so* libk3bplugin.so.2@
libk3bcore.la* libk3bplugin.so.2.0.0*

libk3bcore.so.2@ libk3bproject.so@
libk3bcore.so.2.0.0* libk3bproject.so.2@
