Just starting with Ubuntu LINUX - Admin password???

Hi all,

I am just getting started with Ubuntu LINUX. On an old Sony Vaio, running Microsoft Vista on the other side of the patricians.

Mainly by stumbling about, I am learning how most things work.

BUT - Even with printing and VERY carefully reading (I'm nervous), I have not managed to work out how to change my "only person using the machine" Administrator Password, to something THAT I KNOW!

PLEASE HELP IF YOU CAN - BECAUSE I CAN'T INSTALL MORE SOFTWARE, ETC. Or even wake up my computer when "it goes to sleep".

I think you can tell that I am an intelligent user, NOT a serious techie!

The Ubuntu I downloaded from their main site, put whatever onto a USB key, all following their instructions. Much to my delight, every seems to work!

Except - finding out my "admin password" OR changing my "Admin password" so I can install new software, etc.

As this is my first visit here, I'm not even sure how people reply?

Maybe here, OR to either of my normal email addresses?:
nigel.david.stewart@gmail.com
and / or
fooodsforests@gmail.com

THANK YOU, for rescuing me!

BY THE WAY,
MY NEIGHBOR LIKES MY NEW UBUNTU EXPERIENCE SO MUCH, THAT SHE WANTS ONE TOO!
But she is French speaking, so maybe that will complicate things, but Brussels, Belgium is like that.
Lots of Arabic, Romanian, Italian, etc, etc, speakers in this town!

So, you would be helping at least 2 people, (maybe many more),

AND possibly the small Jack Russel dog that is currently licking my leg - makes it hard to concentrate, but he wants to play, NOW!

All the best to all, and be well,

Nigel

I think you will find *buntu uses sudo all the time, so, use 'sudo <command>' to do any admin on your box, your password is what it will be expecting.

Your friend will be OK, there are lots of languages within most distros, she should even be able to choose at the initial screen when she runs the live installer.

There should be lots of documentation on how to go about things, just look it up.

Ubuntu does not have an Admin password per say, as fatmac mentions. To carry out admin tasks you have to elevate your user privileges to an admin (root) level by using the sudo command.
Code:
$ sudo <command>
$ Password? <YOUR password, i.e. the one you use to access your account>
#
Note the prompt changes from "$" to "#" when you're elevated to root, or "Admin", privilege.

As far as I know, Distros based on Debian, like Ubunto, all use this method, Distros based on Red Hat have a separate root account and password.

You set the language, keyboard layout (Belgium? Possibly azerty rather than qwerty?), etc, during install or if a live Distro, during the initial setup.

Hope that helps.

Play Bonny!

In order to successfully install Ubuntu, you need to create one user (minimum) with a password and use sudo as mentioned. To best understand that, read the Ubuntu documentation at their link below.

Hey Nigel - Welcome to the LQ forum - good to have you ! Hope your dog is enjoying linux as much as you are, so far

In answer to another of your questions, as you may already have noticed by now, all questions and answers happen openly within the threads themselves, so that any member may benefit from the knowledge imparted.

You already have the answers to your query concerning how Ubuntu handles admin privileges. If you would like more help with that, don't hesitate to ask.

'Be seeing you'
