Is RHEL "Firewall" during install the same as IPTables?

When you instal RHEL, during the graphical installer, there is a point where you can setup the Firewall. is that the same as manually setting up the IPTables once the server is booted?

I've never done either but have only heard people talk about iptables so wondering if they are the same thing.

the redhat firewall tools are a wrapper for iptables, the iptables rules it builds are stored in /etc/sysconfig/iptables.

Cool, so I could just set up what ports I need to open in the GUI when I install, then not have to mess with the iptables files afterward it sounds like. thanks!

Yes, but as ever, a gui tool isn't really that great, and there are much better rulebases you could write yourself, generally and standard DOS defences, state handling etc.

ok, thanks Acid. I'm just loading an internal server now, so this will give me a good chance to play around with iptables.
