It would also be worth poking around in the BIOS to check that it is set to use the on-board graphics. IIRC, my old board had a BIOS option to use either the on-board AGP *or* a PCI slot.
You must have missed this post.

I beleive I did. I was sorting through them pretty quickly. Thanks for pointing that out.

*****edit
I'm starting to think that my temp fix won't improve. When I tried to set more than 256 color, I got the same error message. My current guess is that by leaving default settings I have enough AGP memory to load my super low resolution desktop, but nothing more. I guess I'll have to get a video card then.

Unfortunately, I expected that. Is this the same box you were running Slackware on earlier?

Yes it is. I suppose I'll just look about for a card then. If I can't get my brother to let me have one, I really don't think such an old peice of hardware could be expensive.

*****edit (I'm doing that a lot tonight)
I changed my xorg configuration files back to what they should be to avoid any problems, as they did seem to be causing some.

This is the same box you were running in February?
Would you like me to test my old S3 and see if it still works?
This old stuff is cheap.

I just tried 'lsmod|grep agpgart and I got this:

Code:
 agpgart 45092 0 (unused)
Time to recheck bios and see if I can turn it on, eh?

lol, it seems like it. This is still my first Linux installation; someone else did my actual 'first'

Silly me, I should have paid better attention.

*****yet another one
PhoenixBios is starting Linux as soon as I exit, without giving me a chance to start it again, and there are 5 main menus that I can't leave without restarting. What a pain.
Does LQ have an IRC room?

Gotcha.

On second thought, not many people spend as much time poking around the BIOS as I do, and I hate to cut-and-paste.

At least we know agpgart loaded.

funny, I don't see any way to enable the AGP card. Is it possible to mount (correct terminology?) from the command line?

'mount' refers to an IO device specifically then?
