Is it safe to manually change the /etc/passwd file?

I want to create a new user

useradd user1

Then associate it with an already existing directory in the passwd file.

Cheers

That shouldn't be a problem. I've edited passwd before to change the default shell.

Yes, it is perfectly fine to do so. For my knowledge, should shadow be run again after manually editing the file, just out of curiousity?
