Security is a rather ambiguous goal these days. It wasn't too long ago that things like running as a root user was being argued. Once we get closer to secure we find we have more issues.
Linux distros are not hardened by default usually. The things that make one secure on the internet are a collection of practices. The more you know about and use will make your system slightly more secure. These practices may involve many parts of the connection. From hardened distro, to watching scripts and checking authentication to using secure browser if needed. Then you would have to monitor your banking to be sure no one did attack your account. There is no substitute for strong passwords and forcing strong security across the connection.
Even if you tell your bank that you refuse to have web based access, that doesn't mean a crook can get your money. They have automated malware that run 24/7 on this.
This post has inspired me to ask forum members ideas on how to make a secure distro.
