iphone notrecognised by ubuntu 14

I've downloaded ifuse and read and followed several instructions but cannot connect my iphone 4s to download pictures. I'm thinking it may be a hardware problem (usb?). There is no reaction to connecting the phone via usb cord. There's no instance of it in the file system.
Any help please. Thanks.

Do you have hfs-utils installed?
Also when you plug in phone, what mount options are available, MTP?

I intalled hfsutils - there's no change. Nothing happens when I plug my iphone into an available usb connection. I have also unplugged the mouse and used that connection - no dice.

Apple goes out of its way to make iJunk difficult to use with Linux.

This might help a bit: http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/can-get...rk-well-linux/
