Internet in Ubuntu (dapper drake) only connects to certain sites

My problem is that whenever i use firefox, only certain sites will work. Ubuntu, linux questions, and the winehq websites are the only ones that will load.

Any other webpage, including www.google.com, will not load, and I get the error screen that says that the connection has timed out, or that it is taking too long to respond.

Any help would be appreciated.

what happens when you run traceroute? i.e. "traceroute google.com" or "traceroute winehq.com"?

what does your /etc/resolv.conf look like?

is your 192 nameserver working properly? (I'm guessing it is).

It's weird that you get 6 hops on the trace.... Sounds like a problem with your ISP. I mean, if you're getting out of your network, and ping works, then the problem is not likely on your end.

Do you have another computer you could test with?

Yea im pretty sure it is, because my linux computer is dual-booted with windows, and it works fine in windows. If it makes a difference, I am using a wireless connection.

Try commenting out your 192 nameserver and see if things work. If they do, then you have an issue w/ your nameserver.

Umm I don't know what that means, or how to do it. I'll try it if you tell me how.

I think it may be a problem with my DNS because http://72.14.207.99 will work, but http://www.google.com wont work, even though they're the same site.

Edit: actually they're slightly different, so its probably not the DNS because typing the IP address doesn't work with other sites.

Have you checked your router, my parents put a router word block that blocks out certain words that are within the web address, someone might have put a crap load of wild card characters and then made exceptions for the sites you can access.

I don't think its the router, because my parents don't know enough to be able to do that. I'm the one that set up the router.

ok i think i fixed it, I think the problem was just a bad connection, and that's why i got the six hops on the trace.

Dns Cache

The problem usually is fixed by flushing the DNS Cache.
