intel 845 gl graphics and cmi9738 onboard sound problem
I have pentium4 1.5 system with 256 MB DDR RAM. It has KOB 845GL NDSMx MB with on board sound and graphics. Display adapter is Intel 82845G/GL graphics controller and sound is C-Media AC97 version 2.2. I installed Mandrake Linux 8.2. I get only 16 bit 640x480 resolution for X. Sound is not at all recognised. Any help will be appreciated in making X good and sound functioning.
the 845 chipset is relatively new. ML 8.2 still has no support for this (AFAIK). You might need to get a new kernel an recompile. According to some bugzilla posts the 2.4.19 pre kernel versions from http://rawhide.redhat.com works out for this chipset. I don't know if mandrake has an rpm package for a new kernel.
Thanks 4 the reply. How about support for C-Media on board chipset for sound CMI9738. I saw cmpci and did alias for it in modules.conf. It is loaded. But as there is no /dev/dsp, i couldn't use it. When Itry to make /devdsp using MAKEDEV, i am unable to make. Most probably it is because of devfs. How to make devices with devfs on.
Hey, I'm running RH 8.0 on a box with a 82845G/GL Graphics Controller. It gave me the option of choosing this controller when I set up but the quality of graphics was terrible. I found that the "vesa" generic driver which was among the choices of drivers works somewhat better though not perfectly. You might try finding this driver, but the ultimate solution is to wait until a kernel upgrade supports the controller properly. I understand that kernel 2.6 will offer the proper support. Can you wait about 6 months? Try "vesa."
Hi,
I have installed RH8 on P4 2GHz, with Mercury Mother Board.
The Mother Board has builtin Video and Sound card.
It uses Intel's 845GL Chipset.
I could not sense the sound after intalling RH8.
do I need to buy seperate sound card for this problem ?
Please help me.
I have the same chip 82845G/GL Graphics Controller. Right now i am concentrated on the display part. i have tried several versions of linux (Rh 8.0) & ML 9.0 are the latest. I have got a terrible disply with red hat. but nothing with Mandrake.

Hey if u are using a Mercury motherboard using the Intel845gl Chipset then there is a small Tweak... Just Enter the CMOS settings at boot time and follow
Advanced PCI COnfig -> Primary Display Adapter.
Now change its value to AGP(default is PCI) and disble the allocate IRQ to PCI. Now just boot into linux and voila u will feel the difference. I am now able to use 1024x768 with 24 bit depth.
Hope u guys find it useful.
PS: I found it on my own. If anyone understood why this worked please mail the reason to me.
